Singapore is a small island city-state at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, and it packs a great deal into a short visit. English is widely spoken, the trains are fast and the streets are spotless, which makes it a gentle introduction to Southeast Asia. It is hot and humid all year, with frequent afternoon showers, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and evening.
Marina Bay is the modern face of the city. Gardens by the Bay has the Supertree Grove, tall steel structures planted with ferns and orchids, plus two cooled glass conservatories, the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest with its indoor waterfall; the Supertrees light up for a free light-and-music show each evening. Across the water, the Merlion statue spouts water in front of Marina Bay Sands, whose rooftop SkyPark has an observation deck.
The Singapore Botanic Gardens, the country's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, includes the National Orchid Garden, and Mandai in the north has the Singapore Zoo, the Night Safari and Bird Paradise. Sentosa, an island resort linked by cable car, monorail and boardwalk, has Universal Studios Singapore, beaches and a large aquarium. At Changi Airport, the Jewel complex has an indoor waterfall worth an extra hour on arrival or departure.
Singapore's culture is best tasted. Its hawker centres, where dozens of stalls serve chicken rice, laksa, satay and chili crab at shared tables, are on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Chinatown has temples and shophouses, Little India is bright with spice shops and flower garlands, and Kampong Glam, around the golden-domed Sultan Mosque, has boutiques and cafes on Haji Lane. Along the Singapore River, Clarke Quay and Boat Quay have riverside restaurants in restored warehouses, and bumboat rides pass beneath the bridges at dusk. Most sights are a short ride apart on the MRT, which accepts contactless bank cards at the gates.
