Hong Kong is a city of towers squeezed between mountains and one of the world's great natural harbors, and much of the fun is simply moving around it. The Star Ferry has crossed Victoria Harbour between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island since 1888, and the double-decker trams on the island are cheap and slow in the best way. Most of the territory is actually green, with country parks covering a large share of the land.
On Hong Kong Island, the Peak Tram climbs steeply to Victoria Peak, where the view over the skyline and harbor is the city's classic picture, best at dusk. Below, the Central and Mid-Levels escalator, a long chain of outdoor escalators, carries walkers uphill past restaurants and bars, and Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road is filled with smoke from hanging incense coils. On the south side, the Dragon's Back trail is an easy ridge hike with sea views.
Across the water, the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade faces the island skyline, where the Symphony of Lights show plays each evening. Kowloon has the Temple Street Night Market, Mong Kok's street markets and the West Kowloon Cultural District, home to M+, a museum of visual culture opened in 2021, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum. Wong Tai Sin Temple is a busy Taoist temple where worshippers shake fortune sticks.
On Lantau Island, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car rises over hills and sea to the Tian Tan Buddha, a 34-meter bronze Buddha reached by a long staircase, beside Po Lin Monastery. Outlying islands such as Cheung Chau and Lamma make good half-day escapes by ferry, with seafood restaurants and car-free villages. Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park suit families. For a final view of the harbor, take an evening ride on the Star Ferry, when the towers on both sides are lit and the crossing costs very little.
